If you’re tired of typing in those web sites addresses (URLs) into the address panel, or even click on your favourite links (that is if you archive and properly manage your favourites), or just want to just get to the latest news quickly, then its time you get it sent to your desktop. If you have not encountered the term RSS a.k.a ‘Rich Site Summary’ (RSS 0.91) or ‘Really Simple Syndication’ (RSS 2.0), its this simple way of grabbing syndicated content, news or information from your favourite web sites and delivering it to your desktop.
What it means to all of us is, no more surfing to the 5 or 10 web sites we regularly visit. Now it gets delivered to you. You can choose to have just the headlines, allowing you to do a quick scan of the top headlines, its quick, no more long page downloads, no more worries about cookies being planted into your PC, and get down to what you’re looking for. It’s just a great timesaver.
What do I need to get started?
The first thing you need to decide on, is to choose how you want your RSS syndicated content delivered. You need a RSS reader. Checkout this link to About.com to get reviews of some popular RSS Readers. But if you’re not bothered, then let me recommend you some choices.
If you’re using MS Outlook, I have personally tried You Software or now with its new name Attensa.com, its a great plug-in companion that sits in your Outlook and get your RSS feed direct to your email client. It even has a plugin to your web browser which allows easy subscription to sites that offer RSS feeds. However, for the more advanced users I would recommend you try out Mozilla Thunderbird. Besides being an excellent email client with a fantastic junk mail filter, it has a built-in RSS reader.
I find that most useful. Happy RSS-ing! Start getting your favourite news delivered to your desktop. If you need more information about RSS, visit this Wikipedia link.
