VoIP, IMs and now Virtual VideoPhone

I remember that some while ago when I was asked by a venture cap consultant over the viability of VoIP in Malaysia, back in the mid to late 90s (1997-98). And my answer on the success of VoIP would be dependent on web penetration and mass adoption of hardware user interfaces. The immediate 2-3 years would not see returns, but look at it today.

Almost 10 years later, VoIP is now viable. We not only see the technology employed by some hardware vendors, but now even employed onto instant messaging applications like Yahoo, MSN, Google Talk, and also the likes of Skype etc. More recently we we have seen the introduction of YackPack and Yakforfree, Virtual VideoPhone. There’s just an incredible influx of gadgets and tools to get people connected.

But like the telco industry in Malaysia, consolidation will happen – and only the dominant will survive. I read recently over the collaboration between MSN and Yahoo IM, enabling the 2 messenger service to offer members two-way connectivity.

How would that change the face of instant messaging? Time for you to choose or unify? And if you haven’t tried IM (Instant Messaging) yet, its time you ventured into it. That’s how I communicate with my father, do you?
